Strengthening Performing Arts Competence through Process-Based Learning and Educational Theater Approaches

Abstract

This community service activity aims to improve the competence of SMAN 1 Banjar students in the field of theater directing through intensive training that combines basic theory, actor directing practice, artistic concept design, and script reading oriented towards process learning. The training was conducted in response to the school's need for a more systematic, tiered, and youth-oriented model of performing arts coaching. The implementation methods included initial observation, classroom assistance, practical workshops, and a mini show production as the final outcome. This activity referred to various references on modern directing and the traditions of the Indonesian archipelago (Fitri et al., 2021; Wibono, 1993; Febrianto, 2018; Nofriani, 2012). The results of the activity showed a significant improvement in students' ability to read scripts, arrange blocking, lead actors, and develop directing concepts. In addition, this activity had a positive impact on students' self-confidence, ability to work together, and aesthetic sensitivity. This article concludes that directing training in secondary schools is an effective model for strengthening arts literacy through a process-based and hands-on approach.
