News Writing Training for Students of SMKN 3 Kuningan to Improve Basic Journalism Skills

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out in response to the need to improve journalistic literacy skills at SMKN 3 Kuningan, a vocational school that plays a strategic role in preparing students to face the dynamics of the world of work that demands effective, accurate, and data-based communication skills. The training was comprehensively designed by combining journalism theory, live reporting practice, interview simulations, and manuscript editing activities into a complete learning series. The entire process is interactive, participatory, and emphasizes real-world experience as the basis for developing news writing skills. The results of the activity show that students' understanding of news structure, the 5W+1H technique, the inverted pyramid, and the use of journalistic language has improved significantly. Through evaluations in the form of pre-tests, post-tests, and portfolio assessments, it was evident that students were able to produce news texts with more mature journalistic characteristics, such as factual accuracy, balanced information, clear language, and a clear focus on events. In addition, this training had an impact on increasing students' confidence in conducting coverage and interviews, as well as strengthening their interest in the world of journalism. Overall, this program has successfully achieved its goal of improving journalistic literacy in the school environment.
